Newport News, VA — The Music-Performance Sports League (MPSL) is proud to announce the newest franchise in its revolutionary Song vs Song (SvS) league: the Hampton Roads Beatwave. This high-energy team will represent the iconic 757 region, a cultural epicenter long known for shaping the world of music, sports, and entertainment.
The introduction of the Hampton Roads Beatwave is more than symbolic—it’s a homecoming. It was in Virginia Beach on April 25, 2015, that MPSL founder Juan A. Thompson launched the first-ever Music-Performance Sports event at Shaka's Beach Bar and Grill, giving birth to a new genre that fuses the passion of music with the excitement of sports.
But the 757’s influence on the world of music and sports runs even deeper.
Home to legendary innovators like Missy Elliott, Clipse, Timbaland, Teddy Riley, The Neptunes, and Pharrell Williams, the region has redefined hip-hop, R&B, and pop culture on a global scale. At the same time, the likes of Michael Vick, Allen Iverson, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, and Keyshawn Davis emerged from Hampton Roads to revolutionize professional sports with unmatched flair and competitiveness.
“The Beatwave is more than a team—it’s a reflection of a region that has always blended creativity, grit, and game-changing talent,” said Thompson. “It’s only right that the birthplace of Music-Performance Sports is finally represented in the SvS league.”
Set to compete in the upcoming season, the Hampton Roads Beatwave will carry the spirit of the 757 into every head-to-head match, representing a new chapter in the movement that started on its shores.
